Chapter 33
Martin had visited Londton a couple of times. On one of the trips he met with a member of parliament, a barrister who spoke German fluently. This attorney helped with “illegal” transfers of funds out of Germany, via mysterious routes.
Martin also left valuable jewelry with the Englishman. Long before he left Berlin, he sent a trunk, filled with clothes, to the attorney. The German laws were very strict but my father found loopholes that made it possible for him to get things out of the country unchecked. This was accomplished by using certain methods and routes. By all accounts, everything arrived in England in perfect condition.
If I am correct, the Gneisenau stopped at Southhampton and there my dad picked up his trunk with the jewelry and other valuables. So he had all of this aboard the ship now.
Other arrangements had been made via the barrister, one of which was to receive a regular check once he had an address in Shanghai.
