… 1970s Window Dressing for New Harvey Milk Film..

I’m told there’s a Gus Van Sant movie being made about openly gay San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk (played by “tough guy” actor Sean Penn. Supervisor Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated in City Hall in 1978 by Dan White, a crazed former supervisor.

The film is being shot in the City’s far- from- shy Castro District, and to sync the scenes with the era, store owners were asked [paid!] to dress up their windows a la 197os. Here’s a sampling of fun photos from my friend Leon Kunke.

Seen at SF Cacti Show

………………………………

The essence of a garden is

The path through.

The curves and straight lines

And the corners and curved intersection

Seem to say:

See this plant

See that rock

What a view.

The Japanese use stepping stones

So you will look beneath your feet;

Some others use grass

To recall a time when the garden

Was manicured by sheep.

Some say the garden

Is as good as one’s clippers;

Some want a wild garden

With vines.

Your garden says who you are.

Nota Bene.

Leon Kunke: Artist & Landscaper

Leon Kunke, artist and landscaper, sits on a rock wall near my veggie garden. Note “the desert” in the background–everybody says it’s amazing that cacti and succulents grow to such amazing size in El Granada!

Center: More Garden, rock walkway near the tropical part of the garden (there’s an unseen pond to the left)

Bottom: Leon created these textiles for me

Far Out Architecure - New de Young Museum

Two views of the new de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park by my artist friend and landscaper Leon Kunke. Looks llike an upside down copper pyramid.

By the way Golden Gate Park looks the best it’s looked in a very long time. The waterfalls are gushing and they’ve done fresh planting everywhere, all around the park. Impressive. The de Young’s new look, however, remains controversial. I love it!
